Your Volunteer Board

Your CARSES board is strictly a volunteer group. They meet quarterly, planning educational experiences for RSES members and non-members alike.

 

The board serves at the pleasure of its member chapters

 

 

Phil Lawton - President

Phil has been in the trade since 1974, first starting with The Gas Company. He attended Valley College from 1995-2000 during while working there.

 

Phil retired after 37 years and began working at Kaiser as an engineer, where he has been since 2010. He is also an instructor at Valley College since 1996, teaching gas heating, and air conditioning.

 

Phil has been an RSES member since 1998.

Daryl Salmon - Treasurer

Daryl literally grew up in the HVACR business. At six years of age, Daryl's father, Ervin, a sheet metal mechanic at Long Beach's, "California Heating and Ventilating Company", bought the business.

 

The first tool Daryl learned to use was a broom! Keeping the shop clean was his first responsibility. The knowlege and skill level has grown a bit since then as Daryl now has six specialty contractor licenses in California, CM status with RSES, and several NATE certifications. Daryl joined RSES in 1979 and opened HASCO Heating and Air Conditioning Service Co.  in 1983 with partner, Sal. Two of this three brothers are also in the business.

 

Daryl enjoys giving back to the industry that has put food on his table all his life. He is married to Lee Ann and blessed with four children and five grandchildren. He looks forward to his next camping & fishing trip, and the time when his 1960 Thunderbird is completely restored.

Ken Robinson, CM, RCT - Secretary  

Ken is a member of the Long Beach chapter since 1986. He is 1/2 owner of Climate Pro Mechanical, Inc., an adjunt professor of HVACR at El Camino College, and maintains this here website thingy! Ken also served as the RSES International conference chair in Long Beach, California for 2014.

Fred Townsend, CM - Region 14/15 Director

Fred was employed by Los Angeles County for more than 30 years, 20 of which were as a refrigeration mechanic. Fred has completed the L.A. County sponsored apprenticeshop program, and received a Management certificate from Cerritos College, Norwalk, CA.

 

Fred has additional education from LeTourneau College in Longview, TX, Cerritos College, Cal-State Los Angeles, and Biola University.

 

Fred is currently Region 14/15 director for RSES, a "lifetime member" of RSES and in addition to holding several positions in CARSES, is a past president.

Parliamentarian - Loren "shorty" Shuck 

Born August 26th, 1935 in Alcester, South Dakota, shorty finished high school before going on to Luthor Junior College in Wahoo, NB before relocating to Lancaster, Ca. in 1956 where he began working in the refrigeration sector of the trade as a technician. He later became office manager and service manager for the same company. 

 

In 1972, Shorty began teaching HVACR classes at Antelope Valley College (AVC), and from 1979 to 1999, he was program director.

 

Shorty received a Scholar in Residence and Professional Acheivement awards at AVC, was a charter member of the RSES Antelope Valley chapter and is still active on its board. Shorty has received a CARSES Man of the Year award, was appointed to the RSES Education and Examining Board in 1993, and served as board chair for six years. He is sill on the Technical Review Committee for RSES Journal, received honorary membership in 2006, Man of the Year in 2006.
